Contract Research

Applied Sciences, Inc. has established an international reputation for research and development in advanced materials, with emphasis on VGCF and CNF.  ASI has derived funding for this work from state and federal agencies, as well as from industrial sources.  Funding agencies include the State of Ohio, National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, NASA, and EPA.

Applied Sciences also performs contract research for a wide variety of industrial clients.  Contract research at Applied Sciences ranges from dispersion preparation and analysis, development of custom thermoplastic compounds, advanced composite materials, CVD coatings, vapor phase and liquid phase chemical functionalization of carbonaceous materials, as well as synthetic diamond coatings and composites with synthetic diamond.

Clients can leverage the expertise of our PhD scientists for polymer engineering, development of advanced energy devices, custom functionalization of CNF, and development of novel forms of nanomaterials.

  • Contract Research Projects: ASI undertakes research efforts within the areas of its expertise for industrial clients as well as state and federal agencies.  Elements such as ownership of intellectual property, publication, and timelines are determined by mutual agreement, and incorporated into contract terms.
  • Collaborative R&D: ASI is experienced in leading collaborative efforts on research and development projects.  ASI technical specialists are well versed in writing winning grant applications for Air Force, Navy, Army, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, National Institute of Science and Technology, and the US EPA.
  • Subcontracting: ASI has also supported research programs of its clients by contributing its expertise in materials development and analyses through subcontracts.

ASI’s staff members are published researchers in fields including polymer engineering, dispersion analysis, advanced materials for thermal management, advanced composites and advanced energy storage.
